Basics

Wild Animal Initiative is looking for a contractor to support our participation in the Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) charity evaluation process and our completion of related projects.

The purpose of the evaluation process is to estimate our organization’s relative capacity to turn additional donations into real-world change for animals. Because it is highly rigorous, it requires time-intensive data collection and documentation.

Although ACE makes every effort to minimize the burden on charities, Wild Animal Initiative chooses to take this opportunity to achieve even higher levels of transparency (e.g., expanding our Mistakes page; auditing our adherence to our Open Science commitments). The Evaluation Coordinator will help our small team uphold these high standards.

  • Application deadline: Candidates reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, which will be as soon as possible before June 21, 2021.

  • Start date: June 21, 2021.

  • Compensation: $19.40 - $23.72 per hour (depending on the approximate cost of living in the candidate’s area, as determined by our salary algorithm), for a total of at least $1,000 and at most $2,000.

  • Time commitments: Approximately 10-15 hours per week June 21-July 15 and approximately 5-10 hours per week August 5-19, with optional opportunities to support related projects between and after those windows.

  • Terms of employment: Contractor (non-exempt).

  • Reports to: Deputy Director Cameron Meyer Shorb.

  • Direct reports: None.

Responsibilities

  • Communicating process: Outline information needs and related tasks.

  • Coordinating team members: Ensure all relevant staff members understand what they are responsible for contributing and by when. Remind them of deadlines and help identify obstacles as early as possible.

  • Curating documents: Compile relevant documents in a way that makes it easy for staff to contribute.

  • Editing: In the process of curating documents, identify and correct technical errors or ambiguities.

  • Writing: As needed, work with the Deputy Director to draft new copy for the website, internal policy documents, etc.

Requirements

The success of our mission depends on the diversity of our team. We strongly encourage people of every color, age, orientation, gender, origin, and physical ability to apply.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree.

  • Organization: Exceptional organizational skills, including attention to detail and ability to track progress on many tasks at once.

  • Managing up: Comfort providing accountability to team members with more experience at Wild Animal Initiative.

  • Writing: Exceptional ability to write and edit American English.

  • (Preferred) ACE knowledge: Deep understanding of Animal Charity Evaluators’ values and programs.

How to apply

Please complete this form as soon as reasonably possible, and no later than 9:00 in the morning EDT (UTC-4) on Monday, June 21. Due to the urgency of this project, we will review applications on a rolling basis and we will close the position as soon as we find an excellent candidate.

The form will request the following:

  1. A one-page resume concisely describing your educational, professional, and other relevant experiences (PDF).

  2. Contact information for a reference who can speak to your ability to excel in this role.

The application process

Due to the urgent need to prepare for the evaluation and the limited length of the Evaluation Coordinator’s contract, we are implementing an expedited application review process.

  • Round 1: Submit an application using this form.

  • Round 2: Top candidates will be invited to a video interview.

  • Final offer: We will make a final offer as soon as we find an exceptional candidate, and by June 24 at the latest.

Expediting the review process risks making it less equitable. We are making every effort to mitigate that risk. After the process is complete, we will assess whether those efforts were successful and publicly post that analysis.

Feel free to email cameronms@wildanimalinitiative.org with any questions about the role or the application process.
