Overview

Wild Animal Initiative’s mission is to understand what life is like for wild animals and identify ways to make life better for them. We believe the most effective way to do this is by supporting the growing scientific field of wild animal welfare science.

All of our programs are designed to advance this field:

  • Research: Investigating key questions in wild animal welfare science and producing research papers for scientific journals.

  • Grants: Funding research projects that show promise of rapidly accelerating progress in the field of wild animal welfare research.

  • Services: Supporting the many professional needs of researchers pursuing wild animal welfare research.

  • Wild Animal Initiative was founded in January 2019 and is sustained by funding from the Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund, the Animal Charity Evaluators Recommended Charity Fund, the Navigation Fund, and others. Our staff are distributed across the United States and Europe, and we support wild animal welfare scientists working all over the world.

Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) has recommended Wild Animal Initiative each year from 2021 to 2026. Learn more about ACE’s recommendation process and read this year’s evaluations.
