Wild Animal Initiative funds academic research on high-priority questions in wild animal welfare.

The goal of our grants program is to fund research that deepens scientific knowledge of the welfare of wild animals in order to better understand how to improve the welfare of as many wild animals as possible, regardless of what causes the threats to their well-being.

Environmental drivers of welfare in urban rats: A multimodal field study of micro-habitat conditions and affective behavior

Project summary

This project will investigate how urban micro-habitat conditions shape the affective and social lives of brown rats (Rattus norvegicus). Better tools for understanding rat behavior could support both wild animal welfare science and integrative management practices. The project will first test whether indicators developed in laboratory rodents such as ultrasonic vocalizations, posture, movement, social behavior, and surface temperature can be used to infer affective state and social experience in urban field settings. The team will then model how environmental features predict these indicators, with the goal of identifying urban conditions associated with positive or negative experiences.

Why we funded this project

This project addresses a neglected but important question: how fine-scale features of human-built environments shape the subjective experiences of abundant urban animals. The resulting methods could support future welfare studies across sites, cities, and taxa, and provide tools for welfare-aware, evidence-based urban management.

When social organisms are translocated, the destruction of multi-generational nests, loss of familiar territory, and disruption of demography could negatively influence the welfare of society members, future generations, and dependent symbionts. This project will translocate Florida harvester ant (Pogonomyrmex badius) colonies by burying replica nests made from ice. The team will measure risk-averse behaviors in ants across generations, as well as the stability of colony foraging routes, demography, and the re-colonization of symbiont populations. By monitoring ants in freshly transplanted and historically transplanted colonies, the project will provide data on the effects of social disruption on ant societies.

Why we funded this project

The “ice nest” technique represents a welfare intervention that could mitigate some of the negative effects of social disruption associated with research or land development. By publishing on the feasibility of the ice nest technique, social insect well-being may be given serious consideration in future environmental mitigation and research protocols.

Between freedom and security, what makes a feral pigeon happier?

Project summary

Feral pigeons in Germany are subject to the Augsburg model of non-lethal population control, which involves attracting them to breed in dovecots where food and nest sites are provided, and their eggs exchanged with dummies. Others are captured and housed in aviaries under similar conditions. This project investigates the welfare implications of Germany’s non-lethal population control strategies. This is done by comparing the stress profiles of feral pigeons living “wild” in the streets, free-living pigeons breeding and feeding in dovecots, and formerly free-living pigeons translocated into aviaries. Fieldwork will be conducted to weigh pigeons (body mass measurement), collect egg and feather samples from their nests (corticosterone concentrations), and observe their behavior (locomotion and aggression).

While aimed at reducing pigeon populations, providing food, and reducing exposure to predators, it’s possible that these measures may incidentally alleviate chronic stress in free-living individuals. This project investigates the welfare implications of Germany’s non-lethal population control strategies. Why we funded this project

This project will contribute to our understanding of the potential welfare effects of (non-chemical) fertility control in pigeons, a leading candidate for near-term interventions to improve welfare in urban contexts. It will also provide some information on the validity of egg corticosterone as a non-invasive indicator of stress by measuring it alongside other more established methods (feather corticosterone, morphological and behavioural indicators) for a more robust welfare assessment.

Field testing a remote, non-invasive method to monitor wild animal welfare through salivary biomarkers

Project summary

Biological samples are necessary to establish baselines and benchmarks upon which welfare metrics can be developed, but collecting them is generally a stressful and invasive process. Our project aims to elevate the standard by which we collect wildlife samples by introducing a novel method of saliva collection that does not involve immobilizing — or even encountering — the animal being sampled. This project will isolate DNA/RNA from saliva samples of lowland tapirs to detect viruses, as well as health and welfare markers, exploring them within a comparison amongst two regions with varying levels of degradation and human-wildlife conflict and, we assume, associated variations in the welfare and health of wild animals.

This project seeks to determine whether the welfare of American mink is negatively impacted in the presence of high densities of Eurasian otters, whether both species’ welfare is compromised at relatively higher densities of conspecifics, and whether there is a seasonality to welfare impacts. The project will also assess whether behavioral time budget shifts in mink are associated with higher chronic stress levels as a proxy for negative impact on mink welfare. These questions will be addressed by measuring welfare through several different domains, including behavioral (exploratory behavior, vocalizations), physical (body condition, ectoparasite load), and physiological (telomere length, fecal glucocorticoid metabolites and hair cortisol) metrics.

Why we funded this project

This project has the potential to contribute significant information to the understanding of intra-specific density-dependent welfare and to the understanding of network effects among predator-prey and competitor interactions of wild animals. Its unusually diverse set of welfare metrics will allow for cross-validation, strengthening both this project and other projects applying the same metrics. The investigators each have a strong background in animal welfare and have made efforts to better align their work with  Wild Animal Initiative’s priorities for wild animal welfare, which makes them good candidates to carry forward the validation of these welfare indicators (particularly telomere attrition, which is still relatively immature in its use as a welfare indicator).

Mapping welfare for conservation management

Project summary

This project will monitor behavioral and physiological parameters in African elephants over one year to map their perception of their environment. The aim is to test this approach’s potential as a leading indicator that is easy to measure, responds quickly to ecosystem changes, and highlights potential detrimental impacts. These measures will be aggregated to define a scale representing the animals’ perceptions of threat that can be estimated for a given time and place. The researchers will then project this data onto maps to identify areas of high and low welfare. The project will help conservation practitioners create management plans to protect wild animals by providing a head start in assessing changes in their surroundings.

Project summary

To effectively steward wild animal welfare, leading indicators are needed that predict the future rather than summarizing the past.  These must be easy to measure, respond quickly to ecosystem changes and highlight potential detrimental impacts that need addressing, including anthropogenic activities. This project aims to test the approach of mapping wild animals’ perception of their environment by monitoring an array of behavioral and physiological parameters in African elephants over a year as they navigate the landscape. These measures will be aggregated to define a scale representing the animals’ perceptions of threat that can be estimated for a given time and place. The researchers will then project these data onto maps to identify areas of high and low welfare, where animals may be feeling alternatively secure or fearful. The researchers intend for the project to help conservation practitioners create better management plans to protect wild animal populations by providing a head start in assessing changes in their surroundings.

Why we funded this project

We are excited by this project’s analysis of a long-term longitudinal dataset because of the importance of understanding how wild animals’ welfare varies with demographic factors such as age and sex, as these groups often face different challenges and have different ecological and behavioral requirements, and negative welfare impacts that fall on young individuals may also have ripple effects throughout their lives. We also appreciate this project’s holistic approach. The long-term monitoring means it is possible to consider not only the usual downstream welfare indicators based on health and behavior, but also upstream factors that might influence them, such as social interactions and exposure to predators.
