Mentorship program

Information for mentees

Wild Animal Initiative’s Mentorship Program provides an opportunity for researchers new to the field of wild animal welfare science to receive individualized guidance and support on research projects or careers.

You’ll learn from experienced members of the wild animal welfare science community in a supportive and collaborative environment. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the field through one-to-one meetings with your mentor, and our mixer events will allow you to network with the wider community and share your knowledge with other researchers who are new to the field.

Eligibility

The program is open to anyone seeking mentorship on research projects or careers in wild animal welfare science. Mentees must be at least 18 years of age. There are no requirements for career stage, field, or education.

Mentees may be doctoral or postdoctoral researchers interested in conducting research on wild animal welfare, mid-to-late-career researchers looking to move into wild animal welfare research, or wildlife professionals who would like to incorporate welfare into their practice.

Selection

The number of mentees we can accept will depend on the number of mentors we are able to recruit. For this first iteration of Wild Animal Initiative’s Mentorship Program, eligible mentees will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are unsuccessful this time, there will be future opportunities to participate in the Mentorship Program.

How to apply

Applications will close at the end of the day on Friday, December 11, 2026. Apply to participate as a mentee by completing this application form.
